The House Republicans showed their hands last week. They had an opportunity to cut another mere $22 billion for the next budget. The proposal failed by a vote of 281-147 with 92 Republicans joining the 189 Democrats voting against the measure.
What a bold move it would have been to cut another $22 billion. In the mess that is Washington with the bloated budgets of Obama for the past two years, with the waste, duplication, and useless spending and jobs, these Republicans couldn’t step up to the plate and join the Freshmen Congressmen who were voted into office to cut spending. These are Bush Republicans all need to go where Bush is now.
Take the time to check to see how your congressman voted. If he or she followed the lead of Hal Rogers(King of Pork) who the Bush Republicans put in charge of the appropriations committee, then it’s time to replace your congressman.
The real Republican leaders are emerging from the newly elected Republican governors. They are taking bold steps to cut expenses in their states. They have no choice. Oh they have a choice, like the one Pat Quinn(D), Illinois took by raising taxes and floating a bond issue to cover pension shortfalls. That’s the Obama way.
The public expected more from the Republicans than this cowardly outcome. There will be a price for this down the road.
Chris Christie faced down 7,500 firemen who booed him. He asked them to boo him more. Said you can do better. And, they did. He said he didn’t understand why they were mad at him. He felt they should be mad at the governors of New Jersey who preceded him the past twenty years and lied to them about whether they could afford what they were offering. In his words, he is the first to tell them the truth. He told them in the near future when they still have a pension and other states don’t(Illinois) they will be sending him thank you e-mails.
The Governor of Wisconsin, after Obama accused him of going after the unions, told the President, get your own budget in order and until you do keep your nose out of mine.
These men are trying to save their states. The 92 Republicans who voted against the added $22 billion in cuts are trying to save their skins. They are not politicians of principle, or they couldn’t back down from these extra token cuts. You can rest assured not one of them will touch entitlements. You can rest assured none of them would face 7,500 firemen who’s benefits they were cutting. You can probably bet they would take the Quinn method to fix a broken state budget.
The November message was clear. It wasn’t fold your cards early. It was suck it up and take bold moves. That message didn’t get through to 92 Republicans. Send them another in 2012.
Here they are. My congressman Peter Roskam, never one to take a stand on anything, didn’t on this. I don’t know who will be running against Roskam in the 2012 primaries, but it will be my candidate.
