Here it is, the solution the state of Illinois has for it’s billions in debt. Amnesty.

Illinoisans can often dodge sales taxes by shopping online, but the state of Illinois is hoping to collect on those taxes next year by offering a sales tax amnesty.

A new law allows people who didn’t pay sales tax on items bought online, through the mail or over the phone between June 20, 2004, and the end of 2010 to pay what they owe without penalty. The tax amnesty runs from Jan. 1 through Oct. 15.
Department of Revenue spokeswoman Sue Hofer tells the Springfield State Journal-Register that Illinois also plans to offer a more detailed worksheet on state income tax return forms to get taxpayers to pay up.

Sales tax, State of Illinois

So, here’s the deal. Sit right down and decide what it takes to get the state off your back for the next 20 years. What will they accept. As I understand this, it they cash your check, you’re free from future claims from the state. What do you think? Is $20 a good number? Probably not, but wait? If only 50 people are dumb enough to send any money and the mean of that money sent is $20, who can argue?

Don’t like the $20 idea. Do you have any idea of what your Internet purchases were for the past five and a half years. Does anyone? Some of mine were made from Arizona where I spend a big part of the year. Some were made from companies that charge state sales tax. Maybe Arizona would take $20 and call it even?

If the state of Illinois ever tries to enforce this, how many class action lawsuits will follow? How does the state refute whatever amount you claim?

So, here’s the deal, you have absolutely no idea what the tax total was, nor does the state? It’s like the state would like you to make a donation to their broken budget. Like a charity, they should say, send what you can afford to help the poor state of Illinois. Any amount will be appreciated.

Now you know what life is like in the land of the Loonies.
