We are spinning out of control for a multitude of reasons. I am picking my favorite. The leaders of our country need to all go to control freak rehab.
Example. President Obama is losing his Cabinet for tax issues. Charlie Rangel is in tax trouble. They each plead it was due to innocent mistakes. The very group Charlie Rangel heads puts together the tax rules. The penchant is for excessive control over ordinary citizens. Obama refers to the people like Daschel as prominent people. Could it be the control freaks in Washington over years have put together a tax code, bigger than three bibles, with too much control? So much so that they can’t even get their own taxes right.
Example. Sarbanes-Oxley put so much control in accounting rules that it has hurt business. Add some more control that takes incentives away from entrepreneurship, and IPO’s were down to 3 last year vs. several thousands before the accounting changes.
Excessive and unneeded environmental concerns have made us more energy dependent than we have ever been. The solution, government will find the green path to solve the problems. More control and a long track record of failures in similar efforts. Time and money lost.
We can’t let businesses that need to fail, fail. We bail them out. It moves control to Washington.
Solving the economic problems that were created largely by government wanting every America to own a home, will be solved by government. More control.
The solution to the banking crisis is an Aggregator bank. It will manage bad loans. More control. The solution to saving people from losing their homes, new bankruptcy laws. More control.
The auto industry is in trouble. The solution. Government will help bail them out and they will build the cars Washington wants built. More control.
The post office lost a record amount of money the past two years. Who controls this?
The stimulus package is in trouble. Every congressman and senator wants a piece of the deal. Can’t put the people first, control comes first.
Would less control be better? In my judgment, it would be far better. Let the system work. Hundreds of new regulations every year. More control. Less production, less consumption, less economic activity, and a lower standard of living.
Control is chocking the country. Control will kill the country. Excessive control will ultimately lead to civil unrest. That will require more control to quell the riots. Isn’t this how it all started in Nazi Germany?
