A business executive learns to recognize lame horses. Someone is always trying to sell you one. It’s easier to pass off your lame horses than to shoot them yourself. Obama never ran anything, so he’s learning on the job about lame horses. He is building a cabinet full of them.

One lame horse shot himself today. Bill Richardson decided it was better to be investigated as a sitting governor than as the Secretary of Commerce. Seems like trading government contracts for campaign contributions makes one imminently qualified to be Secretary of Commerce. Maybe he was recommended to Obama by Blagojevich. Rod taught Obama a lot about how things are done in Illinois. He was angling for a job in Obama’s cabinet. Maybe he would have gotten one if the timing had been different. Nice of old Bill Richardson to fall on his sword.

Arizona is broke. The governor who presided over Arizona’s budget problems is one Janet Napolitano. She was very early to come out to support Obama. Her reward, Secretary of Homeland Security. Obviously, she knows very little about budgets, so let’s give her one of the biggest in the world to manage. What she knows about protecting our country one could put in a thimble. Not a problem, she was one of the early supporters of Obama, you just don’t understand, debts must be paid. If the bad guys attack, we’ll find a scapegoat.

How bad did Janet leave Arizona? The state will be out of money in February. No problem, just borrow some. There is a constitutional debt limit of $350,000. There are those who plan to sue if the state tries to borrow above that. It could get interesting, but Janet won’t have to deal with her mess, she’s gone on to bigger things where she can make bigger messes. Diversity and loyalty rule in government, not talent or experience or even a proven track record.

Let’s make government like the NFL. About 10 NFL coaches will get the axe before next season. It’s a unique thing called accountability. If they don’t win, they get fired. In government if you lose big, you get promoted to a big job at the national level.

We have a lock on lame horses in Washington. Until we cull the herd and get horses that can run, we will be facing the Arizona problem throughout the country.
